Ensuring a National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence
The White House
This executive order directs federal agencies to identify, challenge in court, and financially penalize states that enact restrictive AI laws, particularly those attempting to mandate algorithmic equity or alter model outputs.
The primary goal is to centralize AI governance, prioritizing rapid technological innovation and global competitiveness over a fragmented system of state rules.
This directive means your state government will have significantly less authority to regulate how artificial intelligence operates or makes decisions within your community. If your state passes laws attempting to govern AI behavior, the federal government is now mandated to challenge those laws in federal court.
Furthermore, states that maintain these targeted AI regulations risk losing access to federal broadband deployment grants, which could delay or halt local high-speed internet infrastructure projects.
