Strengthening Actions Taken to Adjust Imports of Aluminum, Steel, and Copper Into the United States
The White House
This proclamation expands the tariffs on imported aluminum, steel, and copper products, to steep ad valorem tariffs, which are generally set at 50 percent.
This tariff will apply to the full customs value of these imported metals and their derivative products, regardless of the actual metal content.
The order also terminates previous exemption processes and gives federal agencies the authority to quickly add new products to the tariff list on a rolling basis.
This action may affect prices at the checkout counter, the hardware store, and the dealership.
Because the new duties apply to the total value of derivative products, the cost to import and manufacture everyday consumer goods containing metals, such as vehicles, household appliances, and construction materials will sharply increase.
Conversely, the policy aims to aggressively boost domestic manufacturing and protect American jobs in the industrial sector.
By heavily penalizing foreign imports, the administration is pushing companies to expand domestic production capacity and hire more local workers to supply the U.S. defense and commercial markets.
Meanwhile, Customs and Border Protection is directed to strictly enforce these collections and aggressively crack down on illegal transshipment, undervaluation, and tariff evasion at the border.
