2026 Interim PFAS Destruction and Disposal Guidance
Environmental Protection Agency
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has triggered the public comment period for its updated Interim PFAS Destruction and Disposal Guidance.
Mandated by the FY 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, the agency is required to continually evaluate and publish guidance on the handling of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Stakeholders must submit comments on or before June 29, 2026.
This is not a finalized, binding disposal mandate, but acts as a technological state-of-play.
It maps out currently feasible and appropriate technologies for the destruction and disposal of PFAS and PFAS-containing materials.
Operationally, the EPA is using this notice to spotlight the limits of current methodologies, explicitly identifying key data gaps and technical uncertainties.
The agency acknowledges these technical unknowns must be resolved before it can issue definitive, operational recommendations for PFAS waste management.
The guidance squarely targets decision makers and waste managers who are currently tasked with executing the destruction or disposal of PFAS-containing wastes.
Regulators and affected communities are also explicitly cited as the intended audience for this framework.
Because this is an interim technology and data assessment rather than a finalized regulatory rule, no explicit safe harbors, exemptions, or targeted industry carve-outs are established in this specific notice.
